A Life Group Testimony | Dive In

Judy Kessinger is a member of Salem Chapel who volunteers her time in a variety of capacities both at Salem Chapel and within the community. She and her husband, Ron, lead one of the our 23 Life Groups. In the post below, Judy shares her path from being weary of Life Group to seeing Life Group as a valuable means of connecting and caring for members of the Salem Chapel church body.

In the spring of 2010, Ron and I were looking for a new church home. We did not want to try Salem Chapel, even though it came highly recommended by several friends, because they had this thing called Life Groups instead of Sunday School. “What is Life Group anyways? Sounds sort of nontraditional and that can’t be biblical!” we thought. After trying about every church we could think of with a Sunday School Program and still struggling to find the church God wanted us to attend, we decided to try Salem Chapel as a last resort. To our surprise, walking out of our first visit at Salem Chapel, Ron and I looked at each other and said, ”I think this is it! I believe this is where the Lord is leading us.” It was that fast and that simple. Well, sort of. We still had that issue of Life Group. As the Fall 2010 sign up approached, we decided that if we were going to call Salem Chapel our church home, then we needed to dive on into the deep end of Life Groups and give it our all.

Journey

Following after Christ is a journey. To press on in that journey, God gave you his bride, the Church, so you won’t have to do it on your own. The Church’s role is to equip you for the work of ministry so that you can carry on in your journey of following Christ. We want to do just that.

At Salem Chapel we understand that you may have attended for some time, found you are ready to get involved, and now you’re looking for some answers about us. A short conversation won’t suffice. You want to know why we do what we do. How are we organized? What’s available for students? What resources are dedicated to missions work? How did the church start? That pastor is pretty young, what’s his story? There are a myriad of questions people ask as they approach the path of adopting a new church home.

MS Outward | A Day To Serve

Located in Downtown Winston-Salem, the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission ministers to the physical and spiritual needs of homeless and broken men. These men not only receive help with physical needs like food, shelter, and counseling; but are introduced to the true forgiveness and redemption found in Jesus. Many of these individuals go on to find restoration with their estranged families, employment, freedom from addictive lifestyles, and an abundant life found only in a relationship with Jesus.

On Saturday, February 4th, Thrive Middle School students and student ministry staff met downtown to serve in the Rescue Mission’s Thrift Store. The Thrift Store sells donated furniture, books, and clothing, of which the proceeds go to support the operational needs of the ministry at the Mission. Twenty of our students spent several hours working to clean the retail shelving, front storefront, and items on the sales floor. Because the Resuce Mission is a not for profit ministry, the small staff at the store are already stretched in their responsibilities to maintain daily sales and inventory operations. Cleaning shelving on the salesfloor and presentation in a warehouse setting can be difficult to maintain in the middle of everything else. This is where our group was able to jump in with some rags and cleaner and help address a real need. The students worked tirelessly, without complaint, to clean and organize the shelves and inventory with the desire to see more sales to support the ministry there. We had a fun time working together, and based on conversations I’ve had with employees at the Rescue Mission, we really had a huge impact on the staff and the overall appearance of the store.

Join us at Starting Point!

Have you ever been invited to a party or other social event and upon arrival find that it’s larger than you were expecting? Not only that, but the person that invited you is nowhere to be found. You walk in trying to appear casual, but inside you’re anxious and nervous, and find yourself fabricating choice descriptions of the person who invited you. If you’re with a date, you exchange nervous glances and look for somewhere to stand inconspicuously. It’s such an awkward experience.

Salem 101

In the post below, Pastor of Church Life Micah Pattisall, explains the purpose of Salem U and the topic of our January class Salem 101.

Salem U is the educational ministry of Salem Chapel. While our primary means of Biblical instruction is through preaching the Word in our worship services, Salem U classes tailor specific Biblical content to supplement the direct needs of our church. Our topical and systematic studies use smaller settings to promote both learning and conversation. We design the classes to strengthen your faith and build community in the church body.

Meet Derrick DeLain, Director of High School Ministry

Hello, My name is Derrick DeLain. I am a healthy 23 year old who enjoys the life that God has given me and I try to bring glory to Him in the things that I do. I have been married for a little over two years to my beautiful wife, Rachel, and this past year, we were blessed to have our first daughter, Tru. I was born in Queens, New York but was raised in the booming city of Hamlet, NC. If you have ever been there, you know that is a stretch. It was all by God’s grace that I grew up with my Grandmother who never hesitated to teach the gospel. At the age of eight, I understood who Christ was and what He did for me, but it wasn’t until I turned sixteen that I accepted that truth and realized that it was only because of Christ that I could be reconciled back to God.  The Lord surrounded me with godly people whose influence led me to Winston-Salem, NC where I attended Piedmont Baptist College. I pursued and earned a degree in Bible with a minor in counseling and with that, I wanted to be used by God in any way possible.
