Thrive Middle Schoolers — along with a bunch of stellar volunteers — pulled off our first ever Salem Kids Kamp last week. The Winston Salem Soccerplex was bursting with laughter, loud games, and a few pies in faces. Each of the kids heard about how great God is through the stories of Daniel and felt God’s love through our middle school students. Thank you for your prayers and support. We hope you enjoy the pictures!
Summer Series
As I take a break from weekly preaching to prepare for the coming ministry year, I am very excited to introduce you to the three godly men who will be teaching us over the next few weeks. Preaching the authority of God’s word without apology has always been a core value at Salem Chapel and these three men have been faithful servants in this regard. Make it a point not to miss out. Come ready to worship and be taught God’s word this summer!

Summerfest | June 15th
We had a great time with everyone at Summerfest! We hope you enjoyed the Bibs BBQ, home baked beans, being out in the beautiful weather — It’s not Summerfest if it doesn’t rain! — and spending time together as the body of Christ. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who gave their time to make Summerfest awesome. If you missed this one, we hope to see you at the next Summerfest on August 17th!
Summerfest is Nigh
Next Wednesday night is Summerfest. It’s the time of year we gather the entire church together to hang out, eat, worship and study God’s word in the rain. If you think that last part makes it sound unappealing, you would be totally wrong. In order to place Summerfest in its proper perspective for you, allow me to share the ten reasons you should attend Summerfest (not necessarily the top ten, just ten reasons off the top of my head):
- The name “Summerfest” has great right-brain appeal.
- You will meet people you don’t know and that is good for you.
- You will have the opportunity to eat free food.
- If you are in the market for a “special somebody,” we tend to have better “product” than do most bars or services.
- Come to behold God’s omnipotence displayed through changing weather patterns.
- You have the opportunity to volunteer at Summerfest and serve those who regularly volunteer thereby increasing your crown count exponentially.
- You know you will miss some weekends this summer and I think you’ll feel better handing your tithe personally to your regular usher in advance.
- It’s good for your children to see you have some friends.
- Attending means you don’t have to answer the question, “Why were you not at Summerfest?”
- Attend and mention this blog post and our Middle School Director, Mark Duncan, will do his “Shaggy Dog” rap for you.
We’re looking forward to seeing you at Summerfest!

Baptism Service | June 5, 2011
Baptism is the believer’s identification with Christ. When baptised by immersion in water, it is a symbolic picture of the death, the burial and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a public acknowledgement that one is no longer dead in sin, but alive in Jesus. Although it is clear from the Bible that baptism is not necessary for salvation, what is clear is that Baptism is a required step of obedience and a proclamation of having received Christ. In other words, baptism is a matter of a clear conscience before God and an evidence of what has already occurred in your heart!
On Sunday, we had our spring Baptism Service and celebrated as Salem Chapel members took this step of obedience before the Lord. Here are few pictures from the service.
If you would like to take this step of obedience and be baptised at Salem Chapel’s next Baptism Service, please contact Micah Pattisall (mpattisall@salemchapel.org), Pastor of Church Life.
Meet Mark Duncan, Director of Middle School Ministry
Hello. My name is Mark Duncan. I have been married for almost 7 years to the lovely Allison Duncan, and am the father of cute little Charlotte Anne. I’m turning the big 3-0 this year (not as excited about that as the previous statistic). I was born in Tennessee, but spent much of my childhood at different times in Sumter, South Carolina and the rural mountain communities of North Carolina. I praise the Lord that as a child I came to know Him and His salvation through Jesus Christ, and my entire life has been shaped and influenced by that understanding and the work of His spirit. I attended both middle & high school here in Winston Salem and I followed the Lord’s leading to pursue a Bible degree at Piedmont Baptist College where I graduated in 2004. I have now lived in Winston Salem for 18 years!
I’ve been serving as the Director of Middle School Ministry at Salem Chapel for just over a year. Perhaps since I was notoriously awkward myself in middle school (or maybe because I’m still notoriously awkward), I feel it’s been a great fit for me. Middle School is a critical time for most students in making their faith their own and learning to rely upon God in the middle of conflict, physical and emotional changes, relationships, and future plans. I firmly believe these years play a big part in shaping, whether for good or bad, our responses as adults to each other, parents & family, and most importantly, to God.

Help Us Help You
We desire for you to build relationships within the body that will change your life. We strive to be a place where you can be cared for and where you care for others by serving faithfully. But where do you begin? We have a few things in place to help you get to know others in the church, but there is a caveat, you have to take at least one step. If we don’t know you’re at Salem Chapel, it is difficult for us to get you involved. Here’s what we have in place to help you take the next steps in getting connected.
Fill out The Register. We use The Register to pray for you individually, but we also use it to know you joined us at worship service. Let us know you are here by writing your name on The Register each time you come. The only way we know that you are not joining us is if you tell us when you are here. The register is the first step in engaging at Salem Chapel.
Join The City. This is how the church body communicates throughout the week. It’s an active directory of events, messages, and information pertinent to the life of the church. Create your account at The City kiosk in the lobby after each service and begin to connect with others at Salem Chapel.
